Head Office of Geodesy and Cartography (GUGiK) is an office servicing the Main National Geodesist acting under his/her direct management.

The Main National Geodesist performs tasks defined in the Act Geodetic and Cartographic Law, and in particular:

  • supervises completion of the State policy in respect of geodetics and cartography;
  • plays a function of an authority of a higher rank in the meaning of the Code of administration proceeding in relation to voivodship inspectors of geodetic and cartographic supervision and also supervises and controls their activity;
  • maintains a central geodetic and cartographic resource and allocates the means of the Fund of Management of Geodetic and Cartographic Resource;
  • records information systems on land of the national significance and co-operates with other government departments in establishing and maintaining systems of geographical information;
  • co-operates with international, regional organisations specialised in geodetics and cartography and authorities and offices of other countries;
  • initiates scientific and research and development works in respect of organisational-technical standards and application of IT, photogrammetric and satellite methods in geodetics and cartography and in the national system on land information;
  • grants professional authorities in the domain of geodetics and cartography, maintains a register of authorised persons and co-operates with self-governments and professional organisations of geodesists and cartographers;
  • completes tasks in respect of defence issues, crisis management and protection of confidential information in geodetic and cartographic activity, supervises observance of the regulations regarding personal data protection and functioning of the management system of information safety;
  • develops directives for common taxation of fixed properties and supervises its course, develops rules regarding location of designed networks of land development;
  • creates and maintains geoportal of spatial information infrastructure as a central point of access to services (searching, viewing, downloading and transforming) in full topic and territorial range of the infrastructure;
  • maintains publically available record of collections and services of spatial data covered with the infrastructure and grants them uniform identifiers;
  • is responsible for contacts with the European Commission in respect of issues provided for in the Act on spatial information infrastructure.
